CAVS ROLL PAST BERT CHURCH 56-21, ADVANCE TO RVS FINAL

The W.H. Croxford Cavaliers opened the playoffs Friday night with a 56-21 win over Bert Church, scoring 35 points in the second quarter and taking a 49-0 lead into halftime. The win sends the Cavs to the Rocky View Schools final.

Croxford struck early and often. Grade 10 Davin Bankebabone hit Carson Stewart for an 84-yard touchdown, and Grade 10 Davanni Brown followed with a 100-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 after one quarter.

The second quarter belonged to the Cavs. Bankebabone punched one in from 2 yards out, then caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Grade 12 Marshall Diggens. Brown added a 19-yard score, Stewart broke off a 47-yard touchdown run, and Diggens found Stewart from 37 yards out to close the half. Benjamin Nwokike added a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Bankebabone scored by pass, run and catch, going 6 for 8 for 136 yards and a touchdown, adding 41 rushing yards and a score, and catching two balls for 37 yards and another. Stewart also found the end zone three times, finishing with 121 receiving yards on two catches and 54 yards rushing. Brown needed just five carries for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Diggens went 4 for 7 for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Croxford finished with 530 total yards, 311 of them on the ground, and Mateo McCormick went 8 for 8 on converts.

The defence held Bert Church to 36 rushing yards and eight first downs, and kept them off the scoreboard until the third quarter. Ryland Rehm led the pass rush with two sacks and two tackles for loss, Smith Layton led the team with three tackles, and J. Horon, C. Cummings and N. Koester each recorded a tackle for loss. Credit to Bert Church for competing all four quarters and putting 21 points on the board in the second half.

Now the season comes full circle. The Cavs travel to Cochrane High School this Friday, October 23, for a 7:30 PM kickoff in the Rocky View Schools final, a rematch of the season opener. In that first meeting, Croxford had the ball inside the Cochrane 20 with a chance to win, but came up short on the final three plays in a 27-21 loss. A win on Friday would give Croxford its first RVS championship since the school opened. This is the one the team has been working toward all year. Come out to Cochrane and support the Cavs.

FINAL: Croxford 56, Bert Church 21
