"This week in class, we've been studying first past the post, the system Canada uses to elect its members of Parliament. The rules are simple. You don't need a majority. You don't need to win by a landslide. You just need one more vote than anyone else when the polls close. And there's no prize for second place. The runner-up goes home with nothing. Football works the same way. It doesn't matter how pretty it looks or how many yards you rack up. When the clock hits zero, the team with one more point wins, and that's the only count that matters. Cochrane has been to this game many times, and they've earned their championships. They're also the only team to beat us this year. Back in August, they taught us a lesson. We've been studying ever since. For the first time in Croxford's history, we play for the Rocky View championship. Friday night, polls close at the final whistle. The W.H. Croxford Cavaliers have been waiting for this one since September. On Friday, October 23, the Cavs travel to Cochrane High School for a 7:30 PM kickoff against the Cochrane Cobras in the Rocky View Schools final. It is the first RVS championship game appearance in Croxford history, and a win would bring the school its first RVS title since it opened. The matchup brings the season full circle. The Cobras won the opener 27-21, but Croxford had the ball inside the Cochrane 20 with a chance to win and came up short on the final three plays. Even in that loss, the Cavs outgained Cochrane 336 to 230 in total yards and held them to 49 yards rushing. Croxford has grown a lot since that night. The Cavs closed the regular season averaging nearly 196 rushing yards per game while allowing just 23.5, and forcing 13 turnovers against six of their own. Last Friday they opened the playoffs with a 56-21 win over Bert Church, scoring 49 points in the first half and piling up 530 total yards. The offence runs through a backfield that can hurt teams in every way. Grade 12 captain Marshall Diggens leads the group at quarterback, while Grade 10s Davin Bankebabone and Davanni Brown have been among the most explosive players in the league. Carson Stewart is a threat every time he touches the ball, as a receiver, a runner and a returner. Mateo McCormick has been steady all year in the kicking game. On the other side, a defence that has held opponents under 25 rushing yards per game will be tested by a Cochrane team that knows how to win close games.
